Language Policy

Wanting to play an exemplary and leading role in the application of the Charter of the French language, which makes French the official language of Québec, the Government adopted a policy to promote the use and quality of French in Québec.

Under the policy on the use and quality of French in Government departments and agencies (Politique gouvernementale relative à l’emploi et à la qualité de la langue française dans l’Administration, available in French only), the civil administration promotes the exclusive use of French in its texts, documents (including those on electronic medium) and communications. Among other things, the policy sets out rules with respect to websites.

However, in order to communicate with governments whose official language is not French and with international organizations whose working language is not French, and to meet the needs of English-speaking citizens, documents and website contents may be translated. For this reason, the Investir au Québec section of the Entreprises Québec website has been translated into English to better serve businesses established outside Québec and wanting to discover the Québec market.

In addition, in keeping with the preamble of the Charter, the National Assembly recognizes the right of the Amerindians and Inuit of Québec to preserve their original language and culture. What is more, since Indian reserves are not subject to the Charter, one section of the Entreprises Québec website has been translated into English, particularly to respect the rights of native communities.

Lastly, it is important to remember that the Government, its departments and the agencies listed in the Schedule to the Charter must satisfy the requirements set out in the Politique gouvernementale relative à l’emploi et à la qualité de la langue française dans l’Administration.
